"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."
~ Matthew (6:28-29)
Red Trillium (Trillium erectum)
Large-flowering Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum)
Toadshade Trillium (Trillium cuneatum)
_____________
Trillium is a genus of about 40-50 species of perennial herbaceous flowering plants, native to temperate regions of North America and Asia. They used to be treated in the family Trilliaceae or Trillium family, a part of the Liliales or Lily order. The AGP II treats Trilliaceae as a synonym of the family Melanthiaceae. Common names include trillium, wakerobin, and birthroot. The above ground parts of Trilliums are scapes with three large, leafy bracts with the true leaves underground as a papery covering around the rhizomes.

Beautiful! Do you know if they can be grown in my colder zone? I'm falling in love with everyone's photos :)
ReplyDeleteI do believe you will find trillium thriving in the woodlands around you, Amy. Since you are a bit behind us weather-wise, take a walk and look. When they bloom in the wild, the bed of white is breathtaking. Since they are not meant to be lifted, often you can find them on sale when volunteers save wildflowers from construction sites. Watch your local paper ... A wildflower garden is a joyful must for gardeners and ... you MUST have trillium!
ReplyDeleteSince trillium are part of the lily family, I too loved the quote, Nancy.
Wow! you have some spectacular Trilliums. They all look so good I can't pick a favorite.
ReplyDeleteI adore trillium, Ki. Have lots weaving througout my garden beds here and a 'feast for the eye' blanketing the forest floor at the cottage up north. Until a few years ago it was our state wildflower (now the Dwarf Lake Iris). Oh well, both are lovely.
ReplyDeleteJoey- Your collages take my breath away. I have a blog at www.greayer.com/studiog where we are doing a series about native plants and I have featured this collage as part of the article. Please check it out- I hope you like it.
