'TULIPMANIA' ~ FLOWERS & FRENZY

"The tulips that sparked Tulipomania were especially beautiful. Somewhat shorter than many of today's hybrids, they often had large flower heads with fabulous mottled or 'flamed' colors in two-tone mixes of red, oxblood, yellow, purple and white. Today we call these 'Rembrandt tulips,' as they are featured in so many famous paintings of the Dutch Masters."

  2. Your parrots look really wonderful as do the others. Several parrots were included in a mixed bag of tulips we bought and they were a disappointment with so much green and too little color. I guess that's why it ended up in a grab bag :(

  4. You are most kind, Jane Marie. I adore tulips (as you can see)! They 'sing of spring' ...

I am a bit crazed each spring, Nancy, and delight photographing gifts planted in fall.

You never quite know with tulips, Ki. Some wimps end up looking like champions!

Thank you, Robin. It was indeed the kaleidoscope look that I was hoping to capture.

  5. Beautiful photos as always, Joey. I'm curious--are all these tulips growing in your garden? If so, it must be gorgeous this time of year.

  6. These tulips are all from my garden, Rose. As much as I hate planting bulbs in the fall, I delight each spring, in awe, and must grab my camera.

  8. your blog always brightens my day! Amazing photos! would love to see your garden. Do you plant your tulips all in one area of your garden or spread them all around? Do you plant individual colors together or mix them for a kaleidoscope of color?

  9. Amy, I treat MOST tulips like annuals so plant extensively in the fall (I must admit, I hate planting fall bulbs but delighted each spring that I 'sucked it up' and did it).

Mamma Mia ... how kind! For a pleasing effect, I plant related groups together throughout different areas depending on companion plants blooming. It's always a challenge in the fall remembering exactly what blooms when! Every season in my perennial garden has me scratching my head ...

  10. Oh Joey, what beautiful tulips, and very beautiful captures of them! Love them all, especially the parrot's! The deer & squirrels don't leave me enough to have tulip mania, but I plant more every year. They only left me about 6 this year, so I am enjoying tulip mania through your beautiful posts & your beautiful tulip captures!
    Thanks! :)

  11. Cat, I'm shocked each morning seeing gnawing damage but plant pounds of parsley to hopefully deter varmints. God was especially good this spring since with my sister's illness I was unable to plant bulbs last fall ... but "Wallah" ... bulbs planted from previous years have never looked so good.
