FAREWELL AUGUST ~ 'ENJOY THIS LATE SUMMER DAY'

~ Late August Sunset
(Hubbard Lake)
___________________
"Let me enjoy
this late-summer day of my heart
while the leaves are still green
and I won't look so close
as to see that first tint
of pale yellow slowly creep in.
I will cease endless running
and then look to the sky
ask the sun to embrace me
and then hope she won't tell
of tomorrows less long than today.
Let me spend just this time
in the slow-cooling glow
of warm afternoon light
and I'd think
I will still have the strength
for just one more
last fling of my heart."

  1. Joey, What a wonderful sunset! I could look at those every day. I especially like the quote. Describes a late summer day perfectly-not yet wanting to notice the leaves starting to turn, or the slight cooling of temps and the shortening of daylight. All of those things add up to Autumn!

  2. Such a haunting yet lovely photo somehow. And the lyrical poem is quite beautiful! I love the "ask the sun to embrace me, and then hope she won't tell..."

  4. Thanks Beckie ... always in awe, we are most blessed to see these wonders every evening here at the lake yet a bit sad thinking of waning daylight.

Exactly the feeling I had hoped to capture fitting this bittersweet poem, Brenda. Thanks for noticing ;)

Heartfelt thanks, dear Cat. Though technically not so, the end of August heralds Autumn for me ... days shorten, we wake to the hint of autumn in the air and begin putting our gardens to bed with thoughts of Spring. (Heading home tomorrow to tackle this task in earnest). Do hope your holiday weekend was wonderful. Hugs!

  5. It's hard to believe that August is at an end and autumn is nearly here. A perfect poem to capture that wish for summer to last.
Beautiful sunset! Glad you were able to enjoy another weekend at the lake, Joey.

  6. You know, I was thrilled at the prospect of welcoming autumn, until I caught a glimpse of your photo and the lovely poem.
Now, I'm a little saddened that summer is on its way out.
I guess I'd better go wash the whine off me and join you in bidding farewell to, what seemed like a very brief, Michigan summer. Wah.

  7. Thanks Rose. I do so hate to say goodbye to August. Back to the 'real world' this evening after a perfect holiday weekend. So hope yours was also :)

Sorry to bring you down from your high, Marysol. I also feel our summer was brief and fleeting, perhaps the melancholic tone ... WAH ;(

  10. Thanks for visiting, Charlotte ... the garden is indeed looking a bit tired (as I am this time of year also). (I'm ashamed to admit, I have not collected seeds in years)

Thank you for visiting and your kind words, Christina.

  11. This was such a beautiful post!! What a great photo, too! I just discovered how to use my picassa on my computer, now I'm like a kid in a candy store...trying out B&W photos, etc. All I have to say is...you have one lucky husband with all that cooking that you do!

  12. Thanks Spooky ... as you know, twilight and sunsets make great subjects. I'm also lucky since my husband, when not my 'Sous Chef', also loves to cook.

  13. Joey:
For your pheasant with shotgun sauce, do you recommend a certain type wine to go with??

  14. Hi Tim ... just arrived home from Michigan's fabulous wine country so, naturally, will recommend our fine Michigan wines to compliment the rich distinctive duck flavor. Just read an article PAIRING LOCAL WINES WITH DUCK written by Mari Chamberlain (a certified sommelier ~ owner of 'blu' in Glen Arbor) who recommends BLACK STAR FARMS 2004 Pinot Noir ~ "The bright cherry and raspberry notes and elegant French oak combine on the palate to produce a memorable combination"; FORTY-FIVE NORTH 2007Pinot Noir Rose (took double gold at the Pacific Rim International coompetition) ~ "... a twist on Pinot Noir ... semi-dry with fresh cherry and strawberry notes and no oak..."; PENINSULA CELLARS 2005 Gewurztraminer from Old Mission Peninsula ~ "Classic, dry ... pairs beautifully with duck, goose and turkey...) I've tasted each and all are delightful. Bon appetit!
