CAROLE'S TRADITIONAL NEW YEAR'S
PORK & SAUERKRAUT
~ a New Year Day MUST for my sister's brood
___________

6 lbs. lean boneless pork roast
favorite sausages and or kielbasa
4 bags good sauerkraut (from refrigerated section)
4 sliced onions
garlic powder or minced garlic to taste
1/4 cup good olive oil
2 heaping Tbsp. brown sugar
1 large diced apple with peel
1 quart organic chicken broth
1/2 cup white wine, sherry, or beer
coarse salt & freshly ground pepper to taste
red skin or Yukon gold potatoes, well scrubbed with jackets on

  • Preheat oven to 325ยบ. Spray roaster with olive oil and layer undrained sauerkraut in bottom (rinse sauerkraut for less sour taste).
  • Sprinkle pork loin with meat tenderizer and pierce all over. Sprinkle with garlic powder or cut slits in roast and tuck in garlic cloves. Brown roast in heavy skillet and transfer to roasting pan. Bury roast in sauerkraut. Add onions and apple . Sprinkle all over with brown sugar, salt, and cracked pepper. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil over top. Add broth, wine, sherry or beer. Cook, covered, for about 2 1/2 hours. Check periodically to make sure juice is not all absorbed and add more if needed.
  • The last hour of cooking, add sausages and the potatoes.
  • Serve with applesauce, black-eyed peas (for good luck), succotash, Waldorf salad and vegetables of choice, like carrots, squash or peas. (Serves a crowd)

  1. I'm making pork loin tonight, but this sounds like a great recipe.

I switched from a PC to a MacBook last year and so glad that I did. I know that you'll enjoy yours.

Those windows (Duke) are near me! :-)

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  2. I recently read the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and there is mention in the book of Charles Lamb and his writing. The story takes place after the Second World War. I'm guessing it's the same Charles Lamb as the quote you posted.

I can smell the sauerkraut where over here. Yum!

  3. Enjoy your new computer! I started out with a Mac, but then went to PC's after that because back in the 90's Mac software was limited. But I know so many people who swear by Mac's these days.

Loved your "blue moon" post yesterday. Beckie and her husband celebrated New Year's Eve with us. She and I stepped out late to see the moon--it was so bright it lit up my whole yard as if street lights were on.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year!

  6. Hi Cameron ~ Santa gave me a new scanner for Christmas and this pic is an OLD shot (in NC for a wedding and tour of Duke) that I had in my office called Windows '95(loved the shot both inside & out of the widow). The trip was a beautiful memory as was my love for old PC ... movin' on ... and Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, dear Helen ... it's been a joy connnecting with you, a gift that 'keeps giving' :)

Dear Rose ~ a true gift connecting with you (and Beckie). Lots of laughter and a few tears sharing. Loved that Thelma & Louise spent New Year's Eve together ... good friends ringing in the New Year are 'as good as it gets'! Happy New Year, dear friend :)

How sweet, Donna. My sister has a cookbook that I want to link to but ... in a rush to get here to the lake and check on life here ... will add (old family recipes). Bless you and Happy New Year!

Get well soon wishes, dear Gail. I'm lovin' my Mac and miss it writing on Mr. Ho-Hum's here at the lake. Just said goodbye to dear friends after a traditional 'welcome New Year's feast' here by the fire (double blessed 'cause they live 1 mile from us at home and bought here to be near also). Let's all move forward into a healthy/peaceful New Year!

  7. Yes, dear Bren ~ heartfelt wishes for a beautiful New Year for all! Spring is right around the corner (though hard to imagine looking at the frozen lake and mounds of snow here at the lake) but I know this too will pass (in the meantime, I'm doning snowshoes and warming toes by the fire :)

  10. I am so excited to hear about your switch from windows to Mac. I've been using an iMac for the past several 7 years, but the power supply went out recently and I have a new MacBookPro in my future.

Hopefully we can exchange computer stories.

  11. Hi Joey! No way... you have a new Mac?? I love Macs. That's all I'd ever used (being an elem. teacher) until my Power Mac got "outdated." So, having to purchase my own new computer (without an income), I purchased a PC. I'm getting by, but... oh, I love the idea of a Mac again, someday! :-) Happy New Year!!

  12. Delicious recipe Joey - I'll definitely try it. . . hmmm. . . maybe for my daughter's baby shower in a couple of weeks. I know her husband's family loves sauerkraut.

Happy New Year! (I hope it's a much better one for you than 2009 was.)

  13. Dear Marmee, with still much to learn transferring from a PC, I see my new wireless iMac becomming my new best creative friend :)

Happy New Year, dear Katarina (one of my 1st friends to connect with on this Internet journey). I have a wireless iMac and though able to carry easy, not as easy as yours ... so am writing on hubby's Dell here at the lake. May this year hold us all gently and may our our gardens shout in joy :)

Hi, dear Lindalou, and thank you ~ time spent to share this message with me is HUGE. Hope all is well in your homefront. Health & happiness are my continued wish for you in 2010.

Oh Shady ~ I have a new wireless iMac with all the bells & whistles. Although a learning curve, I am so excited (feeling especially excited to return home and tackle fun issues ... writing here at the lake on Mr.Ho-Hum's laptop makes me realize more how blessed I am to move forward). Happy New Year, dear friend!

Hi Linda ~ my sister is an amazing cook (the only one remaining in my mother/father/sister/brother family) and this recipe is posted in her cookbook called 'Mimi & Me', a treasured gift of family recipes (many of mine included). Indeed this past year was heavy for many. Thank you for your kind thoughts and sharing in our past/future caring/creative life. May this year shine on all of us and those we love!

  14. Happy New Year, Joey! Love your recipe. We like to have pork in these cooler months. There's a saying here that in the months with no 'r' in them one shouldn't have pork. And it's in the heat of the r-less(LOL!) months from May-August we don't have...only once in a while. So we make up for those months now:)

  15. And Happy New Year wishes to you, Kanak! Your pork message sounds much like the avoiding oysters in any R month myth! Though not a huge meat eater, do love lean pork though not roast pork in warm months ... then, we grill (pork tenderloins), which enjoy all year round.
